A gravity bong is considered a rite of passage for many stoners. The DIY gravity bong, usually crafted from a couple of water bottles and a makeshift bowl, is a common method for consuming your favorite herbs.

While “geebs” pack a serious punch and are an efficient use of herbs, they’re typically made from plastic bottles, which aren’t necessarily a go to choice for everyone. Fortunately, crafting a gravity bong out of a glass bottle is a lot easier than you think. With only a small bit of stoner ingenuity, in under 10 minutes you can create an elegant, cleaner, smoother hitting glass gravity bong from almost any glass bottle.

What is a Gravity Bong?

A gravity bong or bucket bong is typically done by submerging a small plastic bottle with a bowl of herbs on top in a larger cup of water. Lighting the bowl while pulling the bottle out of the water draws smoke down into the bottle, filling it. The bowl is then removed from the top, and the bottle is pushed back down into the water, forcing the smoke into the lungs.

If you’ve never given a gravity bong a try, it’s not for everyone! They arguably hit harder than almost any other method, and the unfiltered smoke can be unpleasant for newcomers. However, they are extremely efficient, wasting almost no smoke, and a small amount of herbs goes a long way.

Why Make a Glass Gravity Bong?

We’ll admit, gravity bongs are awesome. But if they’re so great as is, why make a glass one? A common complaint of the traditional bucket bong is the use of plastic bottles. Many people dislike the taste and potential risks associated with smoking from plastic. These plastic gravity bongs are also cheap and homemade, made to be used and then thrown away.

Compared to the traditional plastic setup, a glass gravity bong is something you can be proud of. They can be made of any of your favorite glass bottles, pull smoother hits, and are cleaner than plastic. Plus, this is a tabletop masterpiece only you and a select few know how to make.

How to Make a Glass Gravity Bong Overview

Now, let’s get to the details. How exactly do you make a glass gravity bong?

There are three different methods of varying complexity and quality. The first method is the fastest and simplest, using just a butter knife and water. The second method requires a little bit of extra effort using a special drill bit that can be found on Amazon for only a few dollars. And the third method, while the most involved, produces some of the cleanest glass geebs you’ll ever see.

While there are three different method, you’ll still need these base materials to get started.

Materials:

An empty glass bottle (liquor, wine, beer, etc.).
A large cup of water to submerge your bottle in.
Eye protection.
Gloves.

Method 1: Using a Butterknife

The first method is easiest and used most often to make a glass geeb, requiring only a butterknife and water. While it is the easiest, it isn’t the most professional method, so don’t expect perfection. Here’s how it works.

You’ll need:

An empty glass bottle (liquor, wine, beer, etc.).
A large cup of water to submerge your bottle in.
A butterknife.
Eye protection.
Gloves.

How to do it:

Fill your glass bottle ¾ of the way with water.
Place your butterknife handle side first into the bottle.
Over a trashcan or outside, plug the top of the bottle with your thumb and shake repeatedly until the bottom breaks out. (Careful, can be sharp).
Finally, place your bottle down into your cup of water.

In only a few minutes, you'll have a glass gravity bong ready to go. The bottom may not always blow out cleanly, but if you want the simplest way to make one, that’s how!

Method 2: Using a Diamond Drill Bit

Moving onto method 2 is our personal favorite. This produces arguably the cleanest and most professional glass gravity bongs. However, if you prefer the entire bottom of the bottle removed, this method is not for you. This is ideal for those who like gravity bongs with multiple holes in the bottom.

The hole in the glass allows for a slower, smoother, and milkier pull. While this method is a bit more involved and takes more time, in the end we find it’s worth it.

You'll need:

An empty glass bottle (liquor, wine, beer, etc.).
A large cup of water to submerge your bottle in.
¾” diamond drill bit on Amazon for $5.
A drill.
Small bowl of water.
Eye protection.
Gloves.

How to do it:

Place your drill bit into your drill.
Hold your bottle firmly upside down and dip your drill bit in the bowl of water.
Start by slowly and carefully drilling a hole in the center of the base (or side if you prefer).
Dip your drill bit in the water often and keep light pressure and speed until you drill through.
Clean your bottle, then place it into your cup of water.

While this may require a bit of practice, you should be able to master it in no time! Just make sure you wear your protective gear, and you use the special diamond drill bits (regular drill bits will break the glass).

Method 3: Using a Glass Cutter and Boiling Water

The final and most complex method is the cleanest way to remove the entire bottom from the glass bottle. This allows you to push the bottle down quickly into the water and force the smoke out into your lungs.

This requires you buy a glass bottle cutting kit to “score” the bottle, pour boiling water on the bottle, and plunge it into ice cold water. It often takes a few attempts to get right.

What About the Bowl?

Those are the three different ways you can make your own glass gravity bong at home in under 10 minutes.

Now, you’re probably wondering…what about the bowl piece for the bottle? There are a few options for what you can use for a bowl socket.

The simplest is the typical tinfoil over the mouthpiece, which we don’t recommend. Option 2 would be to find a glass bowl piece that would fit snuggly in your bottle. However, since most bottle mouths are different, it’s hard to find a perfect, airtight fit.
